Mother animal did not want to breastfeed the calf: Zoo mourns baby elephant
Blackpool (England) - The anticipation was so great. In the fall, the elephant herd was supposed to grow by two young animals, but everything turned out differently than expected. One died immediately after birth, and now the keepers are mourning the loss of the second baby elephant.
According to a report by RTL, the pregnancies of the two female elephants "Nooriahan" and "Esha" from Blackpool Zoo went perfectly until they gave birth. The animals are Asian elephants, a species that is highly threatened with extinction.
However, the keepers discovered that the first of the two animals did not survive the birth. The second was finally born on November 2.
Sadly, it was realized that mother "Esha" did not want to breastfeed the little one. Keepers then wanted to separate the calf from the herd to bottle feed it, but the elephants would not allow the cub to be separated from them.
Baby elephant's immune system was too weak
It was not until 24 hours later that the zoo staff managed to care for the young animal, but it was already too late.
A few days ago, the baby elephant died from an infection it had caught because its immune system was not adequately cared for in the first few hours after birth.
