In California, a 93-year-old woman was troubled for weeks by mysterious noises coming from her crawl space, NBC Los Angeles reported.

She suspected that wild animals, perhaps rats or raccoons, had taken up residence there.

But when her relatives finally called the police to get help locating it, officers stumbled upon a startling discovery during their investigation that went far beyond their fears.

Instead of animals, they found a naked man who had made himself comfortable in the boiler room, which was only 60 centimetres high.

Police tried to drive the naked man away

The intruder turned out to be 27-year-old Isaac Betancourt.

When the police tried to drive him out of his hiding place with dogs, the attempt failed.

After several hours of unsuccessful efforts to lure him out, the police finally used tear gas - Betancourt only crawled out of the cellar during the third operation.

The family suspects that the young man had already been living in the crawl space for six months.

However, it is unclear how long he actually stayed there. The 27-year-old was arrested for trespassing.
