Vacation ends in nightmare: Two-year-old in coma after food poisoning
England - It was supposed to be a relaxing family vacation, but then it turned into a horror for a little girl: Two-year-old Chloe Crook was left in a coma after contracting food poisoning.
Last July, Chloe traveled with her parents to a five-star resort in Egypt.
As The Sun has now reported, the toddler began to complain of severe stomach pains after just two days.
She was taken to hospital shortly afterwards. Her mother Megan reported that Chloe had temporarily lost her sight and the ability to speak during the trip.
A little later, bruising appeared under her scalp. "It was so distressing for Alex [Chloe's father, editor's note] and I to see her like that and know there was nothing we could do. We felt completely helpless," said her mother.
Some tests then revealed that Chloe's kidneys were beginning to fail. The doctors diagnosed her with hemolytic uremic syndrome - a potentially fatal blood disorder that can be caused by E. coli bacteria.
Chloe Crook still suffers from the effects of food poisoning today
As her symptoms continued to worsen, Chloe was flown back to the UK on a plane, where she was placed in an induced coma for four days. During this time, she developed pneumonia and blood clots in her neck and arm.
Megan explained that although Chloe has since been discharged from hospital, she still requires constant care. The traumatic experience also means the two-year-old often wakes up with nightmares.
"Since returning home, Chloe has been a completely different child. She used to be very sociable and loved going to nursery. Now she shies away from interacting with people outside of her closest circle," her mother added.
Today, almost four months later, Chloe still has to take anti-epileptic drugs, blood thinners and other strong medication. Her mother reports that she has been vomiting regularly and has lost her appetite since her return.
Chloe now has to have her kidney function checked every year.
