Minnie and her owner were one heart and one soul for many years. The man never went anywhere without his best friend, and the dog was always happy at his side.

But then, around two years ago, the Canadian suddenly received a shocking diagnosis: a rare form of cancer.

Although he immediately underwent treatment, his condition simply did not improve. And so he finally had to make a really difficult decision - "to find someone to look after her when he could no longer", explained the staff at the Humane Society of Greater Niagara animal shelter on Facebook.

And so, with a heavy heart, he handed her over to the shelter.

Several months then passed, during which the man underwent his cancer treatment and Minnie waited in vain for a new owner - but no one seemed to be interested in the dog. Nobody except her former owner.

"Even as he battled cancer, he thought of her every day, carried her dog tags in his wallet and visited her regularly at the shelter to at least watch her from afar," the Facebook post continues.

It was heartbreaking for the caretakers to watch the man say goodbye to his beloved dog again and again - until the sad story suddenly took a surprising turn a few weeks ago!

"He finally got the news he's been praying for for so long - he's in remission [i.e. there are no more tumor cells detectable in his body, editor's note]."

Of course, he immediately thought of Minnie. "He visited our website in the hope that she was still available for adoption. And when he saw her on the screen, his eyes filled with tears."

He set off as quickly as possible, drove to the shelter and hugged his Minnie tightly before signing the adoption papers.

"After 750 days [just over two years, editor's note, ...] Minnie is finally back where she belongs."
