After bridge disaster: ship bosses pay 102 million dollars!
Washington, D.C. (USA) - A cargo ship simply tears away a huge bridge in Baltimore (Maryland, USA) in March. Six people died. After the US government filed a lawsuit, the owner and operator of the container ship "Dali" want to pay around 102 million US dollars (the equivalent of almost 94 million euros)!

According to a statement from the US Department of Justice yesterday (Thursday local time), an agreement was reached with the two Singapore-based companies "Grace Ocean" and "Synergy Marine" on "compensation" following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
This was preceded by a lawsuit filed by the Ministry in September. The authority accused the operators of having ignored technical defects on the "Dali".
The money is intended to cover the costs of clearing work, among other things. According to the ministry, around 50,000 tons of steel, concrete and asphalt had to be removed from the canal and from the ship itself.
However, the 102 million US dollars obtained in the settlement is not to include compensation for the reconstruction of the bridge. It belonged to the state of Maryland, which is also suing.

"This is a great outcome that fully compensates the United States for the costs it incurred in responding to this disaster and holds the owner and operator of the DALI accountable," said Brian M. Boynton, head of the Justice Department's Civil Division.
At the end of March, the 2.5-kilometer-long Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after the container ship "Dali" slammed into a bridge pier. The freighter was unable to maneuver due to a power failure. Six construction workers working on the four-lane highway bridge were killed.
