The young man from Burgdorf had been missing since October 11, as Japan Today reported. When he did not come to university at the start of the semester, the family alerted the authorities with the help of a Japanese friend.

Now the sad certainty that Claudio is no longer alive. His body was recovered by the coast guard on November 1, as the Japanese police confirmed to NDR on Tuesday.

A police spokesman told AFP that an accident or criminal act cannot be ruled out.

The disappearance of the man from Lower Saxony raised a number of questions. His passport was found in a toilet block near a river on October 12. His cell phone was also found on the same day - on the bridge over the river.
