After being bitten by the rodent, the woman rushed to the emergency room accompanied by her children. But she was never to get there.

The 38-year-old collapsed on Friday evening just outside a medical center in Villareal (Spain), reports the local newspaper Mediterráneo. Paramedics rushed to the scene tried to help, but could do nothing more for her. The woman died.

The worst thing was that the deceased's two children (17 and 11) had to witness the whole thing. They are still in shock and are being looked after by psychologists.

According to what is known, the Colombian-born woman was bitten by her pet - a golden hamster - in the evening. An autopsy will now clarify whether the rodent attack led directly to her death.

The fate of the biting hamster is unclear. The investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.

Every animal bite can be dangerous

Although hamsters are considered relaxed pets, these cute rodents can bite. Just like in March 2023, when a hamster named Blue bit its nine-year-old owner's finger in the UK. The little girl had an allergic reaction to the bite, suffered from a skin rash and swelling and was even in mortal danger at one point.

Doctors warn: every animal bite can be dangerous. There is a risk of infection, illness and allergic reactions. Anyone who is bitten should wash the wound thoroughly and consult a doctor.
