Tragic death in cycling: Olympic star stabbed to death on the open road
Antioquia (Colombia) - Colombian cycling has been rocked by a tragic death. Marlon Pérez (†48) died on Friday after a horrific knife attack.

The road and track cyclist was stabbed in the neck by a man on the street in his native Antioquia on Thursday and simply left lying there.
When he was discovered by passers-by, it was already too late, as"El Columbiano" reports. Rescue workers had immediately tried to resuscitate him, but due to the severity of his injuries, he had already arrived at the hospital with no signs of life.
He was put on life support, but on Friday he lost the fight for his life. The circumstances of the attack are still completely unclear and the police are investigating in all directions. One suspect has been clearly identified but fled the scene. Officers are searching for him at full speed.
It cannot be ruled out that the two knew each other and got into an argument, as witnesses reported that the two had been talking before the attack. It is also being investigated whether alcohol was involved with the suspect or the deceased.
Marlon Pérez took part in the Summer Olympics three times and also competed in the Paralympics

Pérez began cycling in the 1990s, and one of his greatest successes was winning the "Tour Nord-Isère" in France in 2000.
He took part in the Giro d'Italia three times and competed in track and road cycling at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens.
At the 2011 Pan American Games, he won the individual time trial on the road. In 2017, Pérez competed as a pilot alongside visually impaired rider Nelson Serna (58) at the World Paracycling Championships. The duo won the title straight away.
"Today we say goodbye to a great champion, but above all to an extraordinary person whose smile, camaraderie and fighting spirit will always be remembered by those of us who had the honor of knowing him and working with him," mourned the Colombian Cycling Federation.
Pérez competed in his last competition at the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, after which he ended his career.
