Double blow to the Besiktas heart! Eintracht silences the "soccer hell" of Istanbul
Istanbul (Turkey) - Showed nerves of steel, defied all the odds, scored an important three points - and in a cauldron on the Bosporus of all places! Eintracht Frankfurt have claimed their first victory in the UEFA Europa League. The club from Hesse prevailed 3:1 (2:0) in a thrilling clash at Besiktas Istanbul this Thursday evening.
The task at the Tüpras Stadyumu, which was packed with 42,500 spectators, could hardly have been more difficult as they were prepared for a background noise similar to a jet plane taking off.
The comparison is by no means too far-fetched, as the Besiktas fans had secured an entry in the record books in 2013 with a noise level of around 140 decibels. A hellish atmosphere that once brought Timo Werner to his knees.
"We have to stay cool with the ball, we can't let the heated atmosphere get to us," warned SGE coach Dino Toppmöller in the run-up to the match.
Robin Koch, who wore the captain's armband for the injured regular keeper Kevin Trapp, was of a similar opinion: "It's important that we keep a cool head and also have a lot of confidence with the ball."
They knew what to expect from Toppmöller's team - and that's exactly what happened: From the kick-off, the visitors from Hesse were subjected to a deafening noise, with a roar of whistles echoing towards Frankfurt every time they touched the ball - even earplugs were pointless, at least in the early stages.
The background noise did not last too long, however, as the diva from the River Main turned the volume down for the first time after just 19 minutes of play.
Eintracht goalkeeper Omar Marmoush sent the home fans into collective shock with a converted penalty. The 25-year-old Egyptian had previously been brought downby Besiktas central defender Gabriel Paulista in the penalty area, but then showed nerves of steel and casually shot into the middle.
Double strike gives Eintracht Frankfurt its first Europa League win of the season
Just three minutes later, junior Dina Ebimbe reached for the volume control again and created an eerie silence with his goal.
The 23-year-old finished off Koch's assist, skilfully slotting the ball past Ersin Destanoglu - the classic double strike was perfect!
The 16-time Turkish champions repeatedly created promising goalscoring opportunities throughout the first half, but were thwarted by Kaua Santos.
The replacement for Trapp excelled himself in this crunching duel and had the right answer to every dangerous shot on goal from the home side. It was the same picture in the second half: Besiktas pressed for an equalizer, but Frankfurt's goalkeeper was up to the task - and produced a brilliant performance. What a fantastic performance from the 23-year-old keeper!
As is the case when you don't take your chances up front, the home team had to concede another goal. It was Ansgar Knauff who finally put the lid on the game with his goal in the 82nd minute. Arthur Masuaku scored the consolation goal for the Turks in stoppage time.
